Want to add some color to your kitchen? Why not make some dehydrated vegetable wall art? This fun DIY project is not only a great way to decorate but also a great conversation starter. Let’s get started!
Before we begin, grab these:
Not all veggies dehydrate well for wall art. The best are:
These veggies provide a great color palette and hold their shape and color after dehydrating.
Select a variety of fresh veggies. For this project beets, carrots and zucchini are great choices for color. Wash and dry them thoroughly to remove any dirt or residue.
Using a mandolin slicer, slice the veggies into thin slices, about 1/8 inch thick. Uniform slice thickness ensures even dehydrating and texture.
Lay the slices in a single layer on the dehydrator trays, don’t overlap. Experiment with different patterns and combinations for a visually appealing design.
Set the dehydrator to the veggie temperature (usually 125-135°F). Dehydrate for 6-12 hours or until dry and leathery. Rotate the trays every few hours for even drying.
Once the slices are dry, remove them from the dehydrator and let them cool completely. Handle them gently as they can be fragile.
Select picture frames in various sizes and shapes. Make sure they have a backing that can hold the dried veggie slices.
Place a piece of parchment paper on the backing of each frame. This will prevent the veggie slices from sticking.
Place the dried veggie slices on the parchment paper in your design. Make sure they fit within the frame. Use strong adhesive or double sided tape to hold in place.
If you’re going to hang in a kitchen or area with moisture, consider using a food safe sealant spray. Follow the instructions for the best results.
Once the adhesive (and sealant, if used) is dry, place the frames over the veggie slices and secure them.
